Masseter treatment is a non-surgical process that uses botulinum toxin (Allergan Botox®) to relax the masseter muscles, which are the large chewing muscles located at the sides of the jaw.

This treatment is widely used for two key purposes:

  • Aesthetic jaw slimming (to soften a wide or square jawline)

  • Medical relief of jaw tension and teeth grinding (bruxism)

By carefully reducing overactivity in the masseter muscles, the lower face can appear slimmer, more tapered and more balanced, while also relieving discomfort caused by clenching or grinding.

At our clinic, treatment is fully tailored to your facial anatomy, muscle strength and goals, ensuring natural-looking results and appropriate dosing for both function and aesthetics.

What Is the Masseter Muscle?

The masseter muscle is one of the strongest muscles in the body and is responsible for chewing and biting. In some individuals, this muscle becomes enlarged due to:

  • Genetics (naturally strong jaw muscles)

  • Frequent chewing (gum chewing habits)

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)

  • Jaw clenching (often stress-related)

  • TMJ dysfunction

When the masseter muscle becomes overdeveloped, it can create a wider or more square-shaped lower face.

How Does Masseter Treatment Work?

We use Allergan Botox®, a purified botulinum toxin type A, which works by temporarily relaxing the masseter muscles. When injected into carefully selected points within the muscle, Botox reduces muscle activity. Over time, this leads to:

  • Reduction in muscle bulk

  • Softening of the jawline

  • Decreased clenching and grinding forces

For aesthetic jaw slimming, the effect develops gradually as the muscle reduces in size. For functional concerns such as bruxism, relief of tension may be noticed earlier.

What are the Benefits of Masseter Treatment?

  • Slims and softens a wide or square jawline

  • Reduces jaw clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism)

  • Helps relieve jaw tension and discomfort

  • Can reduce tension headaches linked to clenching

  • Creates a more tapered lower face shape

  • Improves facial balance and proportions

  • Non-surgical alternative to jaw reduction surgery

  • Minimal downtime treatment

  • Gradual, natural-looking results

Jaw Slimming vs Bruxism Treatment

Masseter Botox can be used for both cosmetic and functional reasons.

  • Jaw Slimming (Aesthetic Treatment) = This focuses on reducing the size of enlarged masseter muscles to create a softer, more tapered lower face.

  • Bruxism / Teeth Grinding (Medical Function) = This focuses on reducing excessive jaw muscle activity to relieve:

    • Teeth grinding at night

    • Jaw clenching during the day

    • Jaw tension or soreness

    • Associated headaches

Many patients benefit from both aesthetic and functional improvements simultaneously.

CONSULTATION
1

A full consultation is required before treatment.

We will:

  • Discuss your concerns (aesthetic or functional)

  • Assess masseter muscle activity and size

  • Review your medical and dental history

  • Evaluate facial proportions

  • Confirm suitability for treatment

  • Explain expected results and timeline

  • Discuss risks and aftercare

Because this is a prescription-only medicine, treatment is only provided following a clinical assessment.

TREATMENT
2

Treatment is quick and typically takes 10–20 minutes.

Your appointment includes:

  1. Facial and jaw muscle assessment

  2. Identification of injection points in the masseter muscle

  3. Precise injections of Allergan Botox® on both sides of the jaw

  4. Aftercare guidance and instructions

No anaesthetic is required and most patients find the treatment very tolerable.

You can return to normal daily activities immediately.

AFTERCARE
3

Following treatment, we recommend:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the jaw area for 24 hours

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours

  • Avoid excessive heat (saunas/steam rooms) for 24–48 hours

  • Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment where possible

  • Avoid chewing gum for the first 24 hours if treating bruxism

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment

Minor tenderness or heaviness in the jaw is normal and temporary.
